Condolence Message from Singapore Rowing Association Executive Committee
The Singapore Rowing Association Executive Committee is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Nicholas Ee, a towering figure in Singapore, Asian and international rowing, who passed away peacefully at the age of 77.
Nicholas was a pioneer, mentor and guiding force whose contributions to rowing spanned decades. From his early roots in water sports to becoming a World Rowing umpire in 1997, he devoted his life to the development of rowing officiating, education and competition management—first in Singapore, then across Southeast Asia, Asia, and the world.
Through his leadership roles within the Asian Rowing Federation and World Rowing, and his tireless efforts in organising championships, seminars and umpire examinations across the region, Nicholas placed Singapore firmly on the international rowing map. His vision that continuous education was key to raising standards has left a lasting legacy that continues to shape the sport today.
Nicholas also served Singapore with distinction as Competition Manager for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and as a World Rowing Umpiring Commission representative at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Even in later years, he remained a respected “godfather” of the rowing community—quietly influential, deeply knowledgeable, and always generous with his guidance.
Beyond his remarkable achievements, Nicholas will be remembered for his humility, warmth, integrity and friendship. He inspired countless officials and athletes, including his own family, with three sons following his path as World Rowing umpires.
On behalf of the Singapore Rowing Association, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and friends. Singapore and Asian rowing have lost an exceptional leader and driving force, but his legacy will endure in the generations he mentored and the foundations he built.
